PREPARE FOR THE WORST
In order to ensure that your house gets seen first after a hurricane hits, get a list of all contractors together (such as roofers, water extraction companies, yard cleanup crews) and ask that they contact you once the storm is over. This way you are guaranteed first help and you can mitigate the damages quickly. If you’ve ever been through a hurricane you probably know how hard it is to find tarps and roofers since everyone is in the same boat.
Take photos of you home - as many as possible, both business and personal property (a video if at all possible). Keep important documents in a watertight safe, or put them in Ziploc bags in a safe place (not in the attic or near windows), or take them with you. These documents should include insurance papers, photos of your property before the storm, licenses, credit cards, etc.
Make a copy of your Insurance Policy and mail it to a relative. This should include the number to call if you have to place a claim. If your home is destroyed- it’s likely that your contents will be as well.
